What a robots.txt file is for
A robots.txt file gives compliant crawlers a set of access instructions at the root of a website. It can help communicate which areas should not be requested, but it does not replace authentication, security controls or a noindex directive.
Questions about robots.txt
Can robots.txt remove a page from Google?
No. Blocking a URL can prevent crawling, but it does not guarantee removal from search results. Use the appropriate page directive and Search Console process for removal work.
Should I block CSS and JavaScript?
Usually not. Search engines may need important resources to understand how a page works. Review the effect of a rule before publishing it.
Where should robots.txt be placed?
Publish it at the root of the correct host, such as https://example.com/robots.txt. Subfolders do not create a site-wide robots file.
Can robots.txt protect private information?
No. It is a crawler instruction file, not an access-control layer. Protect private areas with authentication and server permissions.
Should I list my sitemap in robots.txt?
It is a useful discovery signal, especially when the sitemap has a stable canonical URL. Keep the referenced sitemap accessible and current.
