Search Visibility / Practical guide

Why Is My Website Not Ranking on Google? Checks to Make First

How I investigate a website that is missing from relevant searches, without confusing an indexing problem with a competitive ranking problem.

Check eligibility, then Compare the answer, then Prioritise improvement

Specify the search before deciding that the site is failing

“We are not on page one” is a starting point, not yet a diagnosis. I ask which query, country, device and page we are discussing. A branded search, a local service search and a broad product category tell us different things. Your personal search is useful context, but it is not a complete performance report.

Look at relevant queries and pages in Search Console, separating your brand from non-brand demand. Identify whether the site has never gained visibility or whether a previously useful group of pages has declined. Record the time period before changing the website.

Also decide which result type matters. A local business may need stronger Maps visibility, while an online retailer may need product listings and category pages. A generic first-page target can overlook the route customers actually use.

Check whether the page is eligible to appear

Inspect a representative URL. Check the response, indexing instructions, canonical and rendered content. If the intended page is not indexed, rewriting its headline alone is unlikely to address the underlying cause. Follow the specific evidence rather than applying every possible fix.

A redirected URL, duplicate version and important page excluded unexpectedly should not all receive the same treatment. My crawl and indexing diagnosis guide walks through this distinction.

If Bing is commercially relevant, inspect its webmaster information separately. A result in one search engine does not prove identical discovery or ranking in another. Start with accessible pages and clear information, then investigate the evidence from the platform concerned.

Compare the page with the kind of answer customers are seeing

Review the actual result types for the query. Are people being offered product ranges, local providers, instructions or comparisons? If most results answer a research question, a short sales page may be an awkward fit. I would not fix that by repeating the query more often.

Read competing pages critically rather than copying their headings. Identify the information that makes a choice possible: compatibility, delivery limits, scope, examples, credentials or a clear explanation of the process. Then check which of those details your business can truthfully provide.

A page should also tell the visitor what to do next. Link to relevant evidence or a suitable service, not every commercial page on the site. The internal-linking audit helps identify useful pages that are difficult to reach.

Separate a weaker offer from a technical fault

ObservationNext investigation
Important page not indexedAccess, canonical and exclusion evidence
Wrong page appearsOverlapping page roles and internal links
Impressions but few suitable visitsQuery fit and search presentation
Visits but poor enquiriesOffer, trust and conversion journey
Several pages decline togetherTimeline, shared templates and wider demand

These are investigation routes, not automatic explanations. If the site has suffered a decline, Google’s traffic-drop guidance provides useful diagnostic context. Do not label every movement an algorithmic penalty.

I also review whether the page provides evidence for its claims. A list of impressive adjectives is not the same as a relevant example or a clear service description. Buying ads does not resolve that gap or purchase a better organic position.

Choose a focused repair and check the result

Start with a small group of important pages and a documented reason for each change. That might mean correcting a template, clarifying the offer or consolidating overlapping articles. Keep a before-and-after record so the next review is based on more than memory.

For local intent, review Google Business Profile and Maps. For product discovery, consider the separate work involved in Google Shopping listings. These are related opportunities, not interchangeable ranking switches.

AI search adds another discovery route, but I would not insert speculative FAQ text simply to chase a citation. Clear answers and checkable evidence belong in the page regardless of the referral source. My AI citations work reviews that source visibility alongside the wider search picture.

Common questions

How long will it take to reach the first page?

I would need to inspect the site, query and competition before estimating a useful review period. Technical repairs and earning visibility for a competitive category involve different work.

Will Google Ads improve my organic rankings?

No. I treat advertising and organic search as separate channels. They can support the same commercial objective, but ad spend does not buy organic placement.

Should I buy backlinks if my site is not ranking?

I would first establish the cause. Links will not repair an unintended noindex rule, an unsuitable page or a broken enquiry journey. Any authority work needs a relevant, defensible purpose.
